There are several groups within the community of St. Demetrios. Each has their own ministry under the guidance of the Church and also provides ways in which people can come together in fellowship.

Loving Stitches

Loving Stitches was formed in the fall of 2006 out of a desire to give back to parishioners in a positive manner. Our idea was to knit or crochet baby blankets to give to newborns being churched on the occasion of their 40-Day blessing. Starting with 12 members the group has grown to over 30 members today. In addition to the service provided to St. Demetrios, Loving Stiches also makes blankets for “Project Linus,” a national organization which distribute handmade blankets to children and teens who are victims of chronic disease or abuse. Recently they have begun knitting hat and scarf sets for “Seafarers House,” a safe haven located near Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale and dedicated to improving the lives of seafarers and their families. New members are welcome and each is provided with yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks and even lessons for those who do not know how to knit or crochet. For more information about the group contact the Philoptochos of St. Demetrios.

agape

Agape Club

The Agape Club of St. Demetrios are comprised of the elders of the church. Their monthly gatherings which take place the 3rd Tuesday of each month, usually in the Church Hall, give these faithful an opportunity to gather together, share laughs, food and memories. On occasion gatherings are held at different restaurants in the Fort Lauderdale area which allow for a change of scenery. Some of the highlights include singing musical tunes and celebrating birthdays. Everyone over 50 years of age is welcome. If you wish to become a member of the Agape Club either join us every 3rd Tuesday of the month or call our church office. Come and see, come to be served, come to enjoy the music and dance.

Little Lambs – Mommy and Me the Orthodox Way

Please join us for Little Lambs, all Mommy’s, Daddy’s, Yiayia’s and Papou’s. All children 5 and under are welcome. Meetings will be held in the Church cry-room at 10:00 am on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month for playtime, singing, learning about our faith, and fellowship. It’s hard to say who enjoys our group more-the mommies or the little ones.

Visiting Angels

Our purpose is to go out into the greater Fort Lauderdale community to those who cannot physically attend Church to visit, offer consolation and company. Presently our group is comprised of seven volunteers who fan out to nursing homes, shut-ins and hospitals on a monthly or bi-monthly bases and through telephone calls. Many of our Angels have established relationship with those visited over the many years.

This is a wonderful ministry that our Church offers those who are incapable of accessing the community on the own. Please contact Fr. John or the Church office for more information on becoming part of the last commandment of Christ “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.” Matt 28:19-20.
