Flowers on the Altar

Helene Tzitsikas Scholarship Fund

 

Thanks to a very generous gift from the estate of the late Dr. Helene Tzitsikas (which eventually grew to $224,139.00) Saint Demetrios is pleased to announce the establishment of a permanently endowed scholarship fund to be known as the “Helene Tzitsikas Scholarship Fund.” Income from this fund shall be used to provide scholarships to deserving students with preference to students studying Greek, Spanish or French, to be selected by St. Demetrios. Under the direction of the St. Demetrios Parish Council, the Education, Youth and Cultural Committee (EYCC) designed the parameters of the scholarship and will manage the application, selection and award process. This year, a $ 1,500.00 will be awarded to one or more deserving students. Visit the St. Demetrios website at stdemetrios.org to apply before the May 1st deadline.

AHEPA                                     

 

The 1st AHEPA- Broward College Economics Competition took place on Monday March 14th 2016 in the Performing Cultural Arts Theater at South Campus. Fifteen student teams took part presenting a current economic problem “Greece – to Grexit or not to Grexit”.

The panel of 5 Judges consisted of the president of AHEPA Chapter 394 Mr. Garry Paxinos, F.A.U. Economics Professor Eric P. Chiang (who is the author of the textbook used at BC), and three BC economics professors – Erick Perez, Gregory Lindeblom and Ehigmibai Egwaoje.

Eric P. Chiang was the guest speaker at the event and spoke about “why we should be studying economics and its current global implications.”

Demetrios C. Kirkiles, Attorney at Law and Supreme Governor of AHEPA Region I, spoke about the origins of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association and the charity work it does. Garry M. Paxinos presented the $1000 prize to the winning student teams. Mr. George Tzaneteas of AHEPA and BC Marketing Professor Nick Kyriakidis attended the event and participated as alternate judges in the competition.
