Concert From Yale University

Who: The Yale Spizzwinks(?)

What: Present a fundraising concert featuring from the Yale University, the vocal talents of the Yale Spizzwinks(?), the finest performing acapella group since 1914

When: Saturday, March 16, 2013

Where: St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church Community Center

Time: DOORS OPEN 6:30 PM; Concert Performance begins 7:00 PM

Admission: $12.00/Adults $7.00/Seniors/Military/College Students $5.00/Students K-12 FREE: Children 4 Yrs & Under

The Concert

The concert will open with a showcase of vocal talents being performed by various local Broward County student chorus groups followed by the grand performance of the Yale Spizzwinks(?), America’s oldest a cappella group.

The monies raised from this concert will go to the benefit of the Philoptochos Ladies Society to aid their high demand in of charitable works of giving aid to the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, as well as offering philanthropic assistance to anyone who is need of help from this ministry.

A few years ago no one would have predicted the skyrocketing popularity and broad base of fans garnered by the hit TV sensations Glee and the Sing‐Off. That excitement is spilling across the nation, and the Yale Spizzwinks(?) know it well. The 17 young men, dressed in white tie and tails, perform a repertoire that ranges from Marvin Gaye to Yale songs to Bruno Mars to West Side Story. Their unique tongue‐in‐cheek humor and sweet harmonies are performance hallmarks. “We have a lot of fun performing, and audiences love our repertoire,” says Spizzwinks(?) Business Manager, Brady Ward.

“Students love these shows,” says music director Nate Barnett. “And it’s really a great thing for musicians who, for all their talent and hard work, may not garner the same accolades as athletes. Music is a way to express yourself, to make friends, to learn about other cultures and to give back. Singers do this every day, and seeing it represented on hit shows makes it even more exciting.”

The Spizzwinks(?), founded in 1914, are a self‐funded group that is entirely managed by the singers. Last school year they toured the East Coast and the Upper Midwest of the U.S., along with performances in Paraguay, Turkey, and South Africa. In addition to performing dozens of concerts, the Spizzwinks(?) conduct master classes with many high school choirs. “It’s gratifying when these students who truly love music see the rewards of continuing to sing in college and beyond,” says Barnett. “Music doesn’t end in high school or college, and you don’t even need to major in music to be part of a singing group. It’s about doing what you love and having fun.”

Singing around the world, the Spizzwinks(?) are long‐used to two questions: What is a Spizzwink, and why the question mark? And now there’s a third one from the dozens of schools they sing for: “What do they think of Glee and the Sing‐Off?”

This will be a spectacular evening of entertainment to be enjoyed by all! Concessions will be open throughout the event. Concessions will be offering a variety of soft drinks, water, and wine, as well as a variety of appetizer plates with pricing ranging from $2.00 ‐ $8.00 depending upon the selection.
