Summer Camp – St. Demetrios

Basic Information

Our Summer Camp will be June 20th to June 24th 2016

The fees for the camp are as follows:

$200.00 for the 1st child,
$175.00 for the 2nd child,
$150.00 for the 3rd child.

This camp is offered as a way for our young people to further engage their faith and build relationships with others. There are many activities and workshops that will imprint the Christian ethos on their minds and hearts. This is a wonderful and unique opportunity for our youth to experience Christ and our Orthodox faith alongside their friends, peers, and mentors.

*NOTE* There are scholarships available for St. Demetrios parishioners who are in need of financial assistance.

Daily Schedule

Our schedule will consist of various hands-on-activities, projects, liturgical sessions, and indoor and outdoor games. We have also planned a field trip to the Museum of Discover and Science.

9:00 – Gather

9:15 – Orthros (30 min)

9:45 – Alone with God (15 mins)

10:00 – Session I (1 hour) – Orthodox Life

11:00 – Session II (1 hour) – (Board Games-Indoor) (Field Games- outdoor)

12:00 – Lunch (45 min)

1:00 – Session III (1 hour) Diakonia

2:00 – Session IV (1 hour) Liturgical Hour

During the course of the day, our campers will rotate through the three sessions.

Orthodox Life:

Is the main time that our campers engage with the clergy and discuss the theme of the camp, their relationship with God and their faith. This time allows for the campers to take hold of their faith and even at times they end up leading the discussion and the priest is merely providing guidance. This opportunity allows the campers to communicate freely and openly with a priest about issues that pertain to their daily lives.

Diakonia:

This is a time which we have the campers offer their time and talents through service. The purpose of this is that the campers explore different ways of giving back to their communities, both locally and at large.

Last year we assembled Hygiene Kits which will be sent to IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) for distribution. This year we will be assembling Baby Kits which in areas of extreme poverty or following a natural disaster, help young mothers care for their newborn babies. Below are the items we ask the families to bring with them throughout the week. Items may be dropped off in the Small Hall between 9:00am-3:00pm. The last day for collection is Thursday (campers will be assembling the kits on Thursday).

Baby Kit Items: *Items must be new and under 12 months in size.

Six cloth diapers
Two T-shirts or undershirts (no onesies)
Two washcloths
Two gowns or sleepers
Two diaper pins
One sweater or sweatshirt (Can be hand knitted or crocheted)
Two receiving blankets (one can be a hand knitted or crocheted baby blanket)

Liturgical Hour:

This time allows our campers to explore and explain the often unseen and misunderstood traditions of the liturgical life of an Orthodox Christian that we often take for granted. Our Orthodox faith is rich in heritage and tradition, which campers will enjoy the “up-close and personal” approach to various aspects of the liturgy. This includes the campers learning about the priests vestments, the service of proskomede, as well as the icons and hymns of our churches.

Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help during the camp. We have Jr. (rising 9th graders – rising 12th graders) and Sr. (18+; out of high school) camp counselors. As a counselor you must exemplify the Orthodox way of life, eager to make a difference in our campers’ spiritual lives. As a councilor you will be required to attend the Volunteer Orientation. When all volunteer applications have been received, St. Demetrios will perform a background check. After applications have been approved individuals will be notified by email.

Campers

Campers are rising 1st graders through rising 8th graders. Age levels will be divided appropriately for certain activities. As we try to provide more for our campers every year, you will be pleased to know that we WILL BE be providing lunch for all campers this year. Please be sure to specify you child’s allergies if applicable.
