6th Sunday of Luke

Saint Averkios, Bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia in the times of Marcus Aurelius, was adorned with the grace of wonderworking and with apostolic zeal. During a festival in honour of Apollo, the chief deity of Hierapolis, the holy bishop was instructed in a revelation to destroy the idols. He went to the temple by night and overturned the statues of Apollo and the others. When this was discovered, the Saint boldly cried out that the gods, becoming drunk from the wine of the libations offered them, had struck one against another in their confusion. A multitude of furious pagans came to avenge the insult to their gods, but when the Saint cast the demons out of three afflicted young men, fear fell upon the idolaters and they with the whole city became Christian. After many labours, and afflictions, Saint Averkios reposed in peace about the year 167 (or, according to some, 186).

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Mode
Εὐφραινέσθω τὰ οὐράνια…
Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death.  The first-born of the dead hath He become.  From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world.

Apolytikion for Averkios of Hierapolis in the Fourth Mode
Κανόνα πίστεως καί εικόνα πραότητος…
The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Averkios, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.

Apolytikion for 7 Youths of Ephesus in the Fourth Mode
Οι Μάρτυρές σου, Κύριε…
Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons’ strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Apolytikion of St. Demetrios in the Third Mode
Μέγαν εύρατο εv τοίς κιvδύvοις …
Greatness has been found in danger.  You are champion of the world.  A victor who could turn the nations back.  You boldly encouraged Nestor to defeat Lyaeus in the arena.  Therefore, holy great martyr Demetrios, intercede with Christ our God, to grant us His great mercy.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode
Προστασία τῶν Χριστιανῶν ἀκαταίσχυντε…
O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant:  O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication,  O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Third Mode. Psalm 46.6,1.
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations.

The reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19
Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother.

Gospel Reading

Luke 8:26-39
At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man fHigh God? I beseech you, do not torment me.” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. And they begged Him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Him to let them enter these. So He gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but He sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.rom the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most

Saint Demetrios Fence Project- Fall 2023

The time has finally come to fence in our property.

Our plan at this time is to close off our property with a 6-foot-high steel fence.  There will be four entry gates some or all of which will ultimately be motorized for ease of use.

As part of this project, we will have to redo the festival outdoor electrical system.  The motorized fence will have to tap into this system for power.  The current electrical infrastructure is approximately 20 years old and has critical salt corrosion problems.  Our concern is that it may experience a critical failure during a festival that could lead to a complete festival loss.

The price tag for all this will be $350,000.  Our community has already collected $227,000 for the fence.  These funds have primarily come from the William and Bridget Eaton Partalis Charitable Remainder Unitrust and The Dina Hatzikostantis Estate. The Parish Council also intends to use the 2023 Partalis Family Lead Trust gift of approximately $27,000 for the fence project.  This leaves our community responsible for raising the remaining $100,000.Please help us as we continue our endeavor to rebuild our parish.  Your gift will help Saint Demetrios  continue its mission of offering liturgical services, sacraments and programs that cultivate spiritual growth, strengthen families, and transform lives.

Philoptochos

Feast Day Vespers Reception: Just a reminder from Philoptochos. On October 25 there will be a reception following the vesper service for St. Demetrios’ Feastday. All ladies are invited to bake a dessert item to serve to our guests at the reception. These must be small, individual, finger food size. If you are able to put them in individual papers, that is very helpful.  Your treats can be dropped off in the office before 4:30 or prior to services in the hall by 6:30. We need time to create mixed platters which will be served to tables after Father Peter blesses the food.
