7th Sunday of Luke
Our Righteous Father Abramius, born in Edessa in Mesopotamia in 296, took up the monastic life and brought many pagans to Christ. Mary, his niece, upon the death of her parents, joined Abramius at his hermitage and under his guidance advanced swiftly in the love of God. Through the wiles of the evil one, however, she fell into sin, and falling from them into despair, she left her uncle and became a harlot. When he learned where his niece was, Abramius put on the clothes of a man of the world and went to visit her in disguise. Through his exhortations, Mary returned to her first hope in the mercy of God, was rescued from the life of harlotry, and ended her life in great holiness. He himself reposed in the year 366. Saints Abramius and Mary were friends of Saint Ephraim the Syrian, and it was he who wrote their account.

Apolytikion of St. Demetrios in the Third Mode
Μέγαν εύρατο εv τοίς κιvδύvοις …
Greatness has been found in danger. You are champion of the world. A victor who could turn the nations back. You boldly encouraged Nestor to defeat Lyaeus in the arena. Therefore, holy great martyr Demetrios, intercede with Christ our God, to grant us His great mercy.

Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet he besought Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As He went, the people pressed round Him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, “Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!” But Jesus said, “Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” While He was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well.” And when He came to the house, He permitted no one to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but He said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand He called, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and He directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Commemoration of OXI Day
On Sunday 10/29/23 the Greek School at St. Demetrios will honor the memory of the Greek resistance to the onslaught of the Axis Powers on October 28, 1940. The children of our School will amaze with their songs and recitation of poetry. Kudos to Mmes. Ioanna Andriotakis Lambiris, Afroditi Petropoulou and Christina Katopodis for guiding the children to excellence. Kudos also to the parents and grandparents who drive them to and from school and supervise their homework. The Commemoration will take place on the Solea of St. Demetrios following the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy.

Saint Demetrios Fence Project- Fall 2023
The time has finally come to fence in our property.
Our plan at this time is to close off our property with a 6-foot-high steel fence. There will be four entry gates some or all of which will ultimately be motorized for ease of use.
As part of this project, we will have to redo the festival outdoor electrical system. The motorized fence will have to tap into this system for power. The current electrical infrastructure is approximately 20 years old and has critical salt corrosion problems. Our concern is that it may experience a critical failure during a festival that could lead to a complete festival loss.
The price tag for all this will be $350,000. Our community has already collected $227,000 for the fence. These funds have primarily come from the William and Bridget Eaton Partalis Charitable Remainder Unitrust and The Dina Hatzikostantis Estate. The Parish Council also intends to use the 2023 Partalis Family Lead Trust gift of approximately $27,000 for the fence project.
This leaves our community responsible for raising the remaining $100,000. Please help us as we continue our endeavor to rebuild our parish. Your gift will help Saint Demetrios continue its mission of offering liturgical services, sacraments and programs that cultivate spiritual growth, strengthen families, and transform lives.

Reminder: On October 1st, 2023 we will begin our fund collection for the Covenant House, Fort Lauderdale. This organization offers a save haven for homeless teens who are in need of the many services they provide. We will be collecting gift cards for their use. There will be a collection box in the Kandaras Hall. Gift cards should be of $10-$15 donations from businesses like, Target, Walmart, Uber, etc. Your donation is greatly appreciated.
